About Big Agnes

Big Agnes started in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 2001 with a straightforward idea: build gear that makes sleeping in the backcountry genuinely comfortable. Two decades on, it's one of the most respected names in ultralight backpacking - known for the Copper Spur tent series, and for treating bags, pads and tents as a system rather than separate products.

The current range is built on HyperBead - Big Agnes' proprietary solution-dyed fabric that's lighter, stronger and more waterproof than standard tent materials, with no added PFAS. It's a meaningful upgrade that shows in wet, sustained conditions.

A note on UK conditions: Big Agnes gear is designed for the American backcountry, but it performs well in British mountain weather. For exposed terrain - particularly in Eryri, the Cairngorms or on open ridge camps in the Brecon Beacons - we'd strongly recommend adding the relevant Copper Spur Footprint and carrying two or three extra stakes. The standard kit handles most conditions well, but the footprint protects the floor on rough ground and the additional staking points make a real difference in wind.

If you spot HV UL models at clearance pricing, these are the pre-2025 versions - same geometry and internal space as the current UL range, just the older fabric technology. Good value if you're not chasing the latest HyperBead spec.

Where is Big Agnes made? +

Big Agnes is founded and designed in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Products are manufactured to tight specification using proprietary materials - including HyperBead, their own solution-dyed fly fabric developed for improved waterproofing, strength and weight reduction.

Is Big Agnes gear suitable for UK weather? +

Yes. The HyperBead fly fabric is rated to 1500mm hydrostatic head and performs well in wet, sustained British conditions. For exposed mountain terrain - Eryri, the Cairngorms, Bannau Brycheiniow - we recommend using the relevant Footprint and carrying extra stakes. The tents are freestanding and handle wind well, but additional anchoring points earn their weight in open ridge conditions.

What is the Big Agnes sleep system? +

Big Agnes sleeping bags are designed with a pad sleeve built into the shell - the sleeping mat slides into it, which stops the pad shifting underneath you during the night. Bags and pads are engineered to work together for consistent warmth and stability, rather than being independently designed products that happen to be sold by the same brand.

How does Big Agnes compare to MSR or NEMO? +

The Copper Spur UL2 is most often compared to the MSR Hubba Hubba and NEMO Dragonfly. Big Agnes wins on interior volume and ease of pitch - the hubbed pole design creates noticeably more headroom and the setup is fast and intuitive. MSR edges it for wind resistance in serious alpine exposure. The NEMO Dragonfly is the closest rival overall, with similar weight and floor space, but without the vestibule awning mode that makes the Copper Spur particularly useful on wet days in the field.
