This is why we stock Wild Country at Crib Goch Outdoor

We find the gap between marketing claims and real-world performance can be significant when it comes to tents. Wild Country earns its place in our range because the Terra Nova Equipment heritage behind it is a big deal. The same design team, UK development process and fabric expertise that produces Terra Nova's award-winning expedition tents also go into designing Wild Country Tents. The difference being a more accessible price point that performs reliably in UK mountain conditions. This makes Wild Country more than suitable for most walkers and campers who need a tent that works rather than one that wins awards for being the lightest.

The Helm series in particular has developed a strong following among walkers and backpackers who camp in Eryri, the Lake District, and the Scottish mountains where reliable weather protection matters the most. The geodesic and semi-geodesic pole structures handle wind and rain better than simpler designs at the same price, that's the Terra Nova DNA showing through.

What we stock and why we chose it

The Helm Compact 2 is the most popular model in our Wild Country range and the tent most of our backpacking customers choose as their first 'proper mountain tent'. A semi-geodesic two-person tent with a design that handles exposed, windy pitches better than simpler tunnel tents at a similar price point. The Helm Elite 2 is the step up from the Compact in so much that it's lighter, more refined construction and better suited to regular mountain backpacking where weight and weather performance are equally important. The Helm Compact 1 and Helm Compact 3 cover solo and three-person use in the same reliable construction. The Halny Elite 1 and 2 are more packable options for summer backpacking and conditions where maximum weight saving matters and the weather is expected to be more cooperative! The Hoolie Compact 3 is a great three-person dome tent suited to group use and family camping. Footprints are available for most models and the best way to extend the life of the groundsheet. The Adventure Tarps in 1 and 2 person sizes provide a lightweight shelter option for bothy-style camping and ultralight use.

Wild Country Tents FAQs

Is Wild Country a UK brand and are Terra Nova and Wild Country the same? +

Wild Country is a UK-designed brand and Terra Nova and Wild Country are closely related but distinct. Both are owned by Terra Nova Equipment, a Derbyshire company that became employee-owned in 2023. Wild Country is designed by the same team that develops Terra Nova's expedition tents, using the same fabric expertise and UK design process. Wild Country is positioned as the accessible, everyday adventure range, while Terra Nova is the premium and expedition range. The shared DNA is the reason Wild Country punches above its price: it benefits from decades of expedition tent engineering applied to a more accessible product.

Is Wild Country a good brand? +

Yes, within its positioning. Wild Country is not competing with the most premium and expensive expedition tents on the market. It is offering UK-designed, well-constructed tents at a price point that makes backpacking accessible without asking customers to compromise on the quality that matters in British mountain weather: waterproofing, wind resistance, and construction integrity over a long trip. The Terra Nova Equipment heritage behind it is one of the strongest in UK outdoor manufacturing, and that expertise genuinely shows in how Wild Country tents are designed and built compared to generic budget alternatives.

What is the difference between the Helm Compact and Helm Elite? +

Both are semi-geodesic tents using the same basic structure, but the Elite is lighter and uses more refined materials than the Compact. The Compact is the more affordable entry point and suits regular three-season camping including mountain use. The Elite saves weight through lighter fabrics and components and suits backpackers who go out frequently and for whom the weight saving across a multi-day route is meaningful. The Elite also tends to have a slightly better packdown size. For most weekend backpackers the Compact delivers excellent value. For those who camp regularly in the mountains and are optimising their kit, the Elite justifies the premium through reduced weight over distance.

Which Wild Country tent is best for camping in Eyri (Snowdonia)? +

For backpacking in Eryri, the Helm Compact 2 is where most of our customers start and most stay. The semi-geodesic structure handles exposed, windy pitches on Welsh mountain terrain better than simpler tunnel designs, and the price makes it accessible for a first mountain tent. For solo backpackers the Helm Compact 1 covers the same use case at lower weight. If you camp frequently and want to save weight across multi-day routes, the Helm Elite 2 is the stronger long-term investment. The Halny Elite suits lighter summer use when the weather is more benign and weight saving is the priority. Come in to our stores and we will help you choose based on your planned trips and how often you camp.

Do I need a footprint for my Wild Country tent? +

A footprint is not essential but is a worthwhile investment for regular mountain use. The footprint protects the groundsheet from abrasion on stony and rough ground, which significantly extends the life of the tent's waterproofing and structural integrity at the base. On grass and soft ground the footprint is less critical. In Eryri, where wild camping is illegal, pitches are often on rocky or gritty ground, we generally recommend using a footprint for any tent you plan to use regularly. We stock Wild Country footprints for most models in the range.

Can I see Wild Country tents in store in North Wales? +

Yes. We stock Wild Country tents and accessories in our stores in Llanberis and Beddgelert. For a tent purchase, seeing the pitched size, the pole structure, and the internal volume in person makes a significant difference to understanding what you are buying. Come in and we will show you the range and help you choose the right tent for your planned camping.
