A road Running Shoe is for clocking up pavement miles but also the gym treadmill or a Zumba class to get you through the winter or a summer festival or traveling when you're on your feet all day and you packed light.
The Hoka Clifton 10 is where most people should start, it's soft underfoot, forgiving across a range of gaits and one of our best sellers. If you want more cushion for marathon training or long days on your feet, the Bondi 9 takes it further. For faster training runs and tempo work, the Mach 7 is the livelier option.
The Altra Experience Flow 3 is worth a look if you prefer a wider toe box or a lower-drop platform, it suits a specific type of runner and tends to be immediately obvious whether it's right for you, it can take some getting used to so start short and build.
For wetter months, the Hoka Clifton GTX adds waterproofing without sacrificing the ride. But we'd not recommend it for running in the rain, since the water will still follow your foot into the shoe and take longer to dry when the rain passes. We always recommend a non-waterproof shoe with a Dexshell waterproof sock. That said we would reach for a waterproof road running shoe between showers when the dog needs a walk around the block.
