Why we stock Ruffwear at Crib Goch Outdoor

The majority of dog gear is designed for pavements and parks. Ruffwear designs for the conditions that we actually send our customers into: mountain terrain, river crossings, coastal scrambles, and long trail running days where the dog is covering as many miles as their owner. The difference is felt in the details: harness attachment points positioned for technical terrain, raincoats cut to allow full range of movement, life jackets with handles for water rescues, and boots built for rocky ground rather than garden paths. In Eryri, where the weather is unpredictable and the terrain is serious, the right kit for your dog matters as much as your own.

The sustainability credentials are worth knowing too. Ruffwear ceased all manufacturing with intentionally added PFAS by January 2024 and uses bluesign approved materials across an increasing proportion of their fabric and hardware. Their Paw It Forward programme donates a portion of revenue to land conservation, dog adoption, and working dog organisations, with employees voting on which organisations receive funding each year.

What we stock and why we chose it

For harnesses, we stock across distinct use cases. The Front Range and Front Range Flex Collection is the everyday all-rounder, comfortable for long days out and suitable for most activities. The Web Master harness provides an additional back handle for lifting your dog over technical obstacles, scrambles, and stiles, making it the practical choice for mountain days in Eryri. The Flagline harness is lighter and more streamlined for faster movement. The Ridgeline Collection is Ruffwear's most technical option, designed for working dogs and serious mountain use. The Switchbak harness doubles as a saddlebag, allowing your dog to carry their own water and kit on longer days.

For leads and collars, the Front Range and Roamer leads cover everyday use, the Hitch Hiker and Ridgeline leads are built for more demanding terrain, and the Flex leads add bungee-assisted give for runners and dogs that pull. For dog apparel, the Sun Shower raincoat handles wet Welsh days, the Vert jacket adds insulation for cold conditions, and the Swamp Cooler is designed to keep dogs cool in warm weather. The Float Coat dog life jacket with its integrated grab handle is the right kit for any dog going near serious water, and the Beacon waterproof safety light adds visibility in low light. The Trail Runner vest and belt are worn by the human runner to carry the dog's water, bowl, and kit on trail runs. The Quencher packable bowls and rubber toys round out the range for day trips and camps.

Ruffwear FAQs

Which Ruffwear harness is best for hiking and mountain days? +

For most mountain days in Eryri the Web Master harness is our most recommended option. The additional back handle allows you to lift your dog over stiles, rocky steps, and technical sections of path where they need a hand, which comes up more often than you might expect on Welsh mountain routes. The Front Range is a strong all-rounder for less technical terrain. The Switchbak adds saddlebag pockets so your dog can carry their own water on longer days. If you are trail running with your dog the Flagline is cut lighter and more streamlined for faster movement. Come in to our stores in Llanberis or Beddgelert and we will help you match the right harness to your dog's size and your typical routes.

Does my dog need a life jacket for swimming in Wales? +

For confident swimming dogs in calm conditions it is not strictly necessary, but for any dog going near fast-moving rivers, tidal water, or open lake swimming in Eryri we always recommend the Ruffwear Float Coat, dogs can get tired too. The integrated handle on the back allows you to lift the dog out of the water quickly if they get into difficulty, which is the feature that matters most in a genuine emergency. North Wales has fast rivers and cold lakes and even a strong swimming dog can get into trouble in current or cold water shock. The Float Coat is the right piece of kit for any dog that goes near serious water regularly. Please take extra care around water.

What is the Ruffwear Trail Runner vest and who is it for? +

The Trail Runner vest for your dog and belt for the human, are designed to share the load so that you can carry your dog's water, collapsible bowl, and kit on trail runs when you both want to travel fast and light, but still need to carry their supplies. The vest holds soft flasks and has a dedicated dog bowl pocket and lead attachment. The belt is a lighter option for shorter runs. Both are built around the reality that trail running with a dog means carrying extra kit, and doing that comfortably over distance requires a purpose-built solution rather than stuffing dog supplies into a running vest designed for one.

Does my dog need boots for mountain walking in Snowdonia? +

For most dogs on most Welsh mountain routes the answer is no. Healthy dog pads handle rocky terrain well and most dogs build resilience to rough ground through regular use. Dog boots become relevant in specific situations: very long days on abrasive rock where pad wear is a concern, hot tarmac sections that can burn pads in summer, post-surgery recovery where pad protection is required, or dogs with existing pad sensitivity. The Ruffwear Summit Trex and Grip Trex boots are built for mountain and trail use and are more durable than most options on the market. If you are unsure whether your dog needs boots for a planned route, speak to your vet.

Is Ruffwear good quality and does it last? +

Yes. Ruffwear is one of the most consistently well-reviewed dog gear brands in the outdoor market and the construction quality reflects a brand building for genuine outdoor use rather than looks. Hardware, stitching, and materials are all built for repeated use in rough conditions. The brand ceased all manufacturing with intentionally added PFAS by January 2024 and uses bluesign approved materials across an increasing proportion of their range. We stock Ruffwear because our customers who come back for a second harness or a second lead invariably come back for another Ruffwear.

Can I bring my dog in store to try Ruffwear harnesses in North Wales? +

Yes, and we encourage it. We stock Ruffwear across our stores in Llanberis and Beddgelert and dogs are welcome. Harness fit depends on breed shape, chest depth, and neck proportion in ways that size charts cannot fully account for. Bring your dog in and we will fit the harness properly before you buy.
