Thermarest Sleeping Mats for Backpacking & Camping

Why we stock Thermarest at Crib Goch Outdoor

A good nights sleep has a direct effect on everything that comes after it. A poor nights sleep on an inadequate camping mat affects your energy, judgement, mood and how much you enjoy your backpacking or camping trip. Thermarest has spent over fifty years solving the problem of sleeping comfortably on the ground, the result is a range of products that cover every use case from ultralight backpacking to car camping comfort. Thermarest comes with the R-value and weight data to make the right choice for your intended use and weather conditions.

We also stock Thermarest repair kits because sleeping pads that get a puncture mid-trip are a specific misery that is entirely avoidable with the right kit in your bag. The instant field repair kit lives in a pack. The classic valve repair kit and permanent home repair kit are for back home. All three are in stock and they're always better to have and not need.

Which Thermarest sleeping pad should you choose?

The NeoLoft is Thermarest's most premium self-inflating pad and the model generating the most interest on our page. It combines a high R-value with a soft, sleep-mat-like feel that sits above every other sleeping pad in comfort for those who want a proper night's sleep rather than just insulation from the ground. Available in regular wide. The NeoAir XLite NXT is the ultralight inflatable benchmark: exceptionally light, highly packable, and suited to backpacking and fastpacking where weight is a genuine constraint. The NeoAir Xtherm NXT is the four-season winter option, with a significantly higher R-value for cold ground camping and mountaineering. The Trail Pro and Trail Pro MAX are self-inflating pads suited to regular backpacking and camping, with a robust foam and air construction that provides comfort and insulation across three seasons. The ProLite Apex and ProLite Plus are lighter self-inflating options for those who want less weight than the Trail Pro without going to a full air pad. The Trail Lite Trooper is the accessible entry point into the self-inflating range. The Z Lite SOL is the foam option: no inflation, no puncture risk, silver reflective coating for added warmth, and a folded concertina design that compresses to a manageable size. The Compressible Pillow Cinch in small and regular provides proper head support in camp. The Z Seat is a sit pad for trail use and belays.

Thermarest FAQs

Is Thermarest NeoLoft worth it? +

Yes, if comfort is your priority. The NeoLoft is Thermarest's most luxurious self-inflating pad and sits at the top of the range in both price and sleep quality. The combination of a high-density foam core, air chambers, and a soft top fabric produces a pad that genuinely feels closer to a mattress than a camping mat. For backpackers who accept a higher weight in exchange for better sleep, or for anyone camping in conditions where a good night's rest matters as much as anything else, the NeoLoft justifies its price with a noticeably better sleeping experience than anything else in the self-inflating category. It is not the right pad for ultralight backpacking where weight is the overriding concern.

What R-value should a sleeping pad have for UK camping? +

R-value measures thermal resistance: the higher the number, the better the insulation from cold ground. For three-season UK camping including spring, summer, and autumn, an R-value of 2 to 4 is generally adequate. For wild camping in the Welsh mountains in spring and autumn where ground temperatures drop significantly overnight, an R-value of 3 or above provides a meaningful safety margin. For winter camping, bivouacking, or high-altitude mountaineering, an R-value of 4.5 and above is the appropriate starting point. The NeoAir Xtherm NXT, the warmest pad in our Thermarest range, is designed specifically for cold-ground and winter use. If you are unsure which R-value suits your planned camping, come in to our stores and we will help you choose based on your typical conditions and the time of year you camp most.

How long does a Thermarest pad last? +

With proper care, a Thermarest sleeping pad should last many years of regular use. The foam in self-inflating pads gradually loses some of its rebound over time, but this typically takes years of heavy use rather than seasons. Air pads like the NeoAir series are more vulnerable to punctures than self-inflating pads but are repairable when they occur. The Z Lite foam pad has essentially no wear-out mechanism under normal use. Thermarest backs their range with a limited lifetime warranty covering manufacturing defects. Storing the pad unrolled and deflated when not in use preserves the foam's rebound. We stock three Thermarest repair kits for field and home repairs when punctures do occur.

What size Thermarest do I need? +

Thermarest offers most pads in regular and regular wide. Regular suits most adults up to around 183cm with a standard shoulder width. Regular wide provides extra width for those who move a lot in their sleep, have broader shoulders, or simply want more sleeping surface. The length of a regular pad suits most people up to about 183cm: if you are taller, check the specific dimensions of each model as lengths vary slightly. For backpacking use, regular is the more common choice as it saves weight and pack volume. For car camping and base camping where pack weight is less relevant, regular wide provides a more comfortable sleeping surface.

Do you stock Thermarest repair kits? +

Yes. We stock three Thermarest repair kits. The instant field repair kit is a compact, fast solution for temporary repairs on the trail and should live in your pack alongside your sleeping pad. The classic valve repair kit is for replacing or repairing the valve when it fails to seal properly. The permanent home repair kit provides everything needed for a durable repair after a trip. A small slow leak is almost always repairable with the right kit and is far preferable to replacing the pad. If you are unsure which kit you need or how to identify the type of damage, come in to our stores and we will help you diagnose and fix it.

Can I buy Thermarest in store in North Wales? +

Yes. We stock Thermarest across our stores in Llanberis and Beddgelert. Sleeping pad choice depends on your planned use, the conditions you camp in, and how much weight you are willing to carry, and it is easier to assess with the pad in your hands than from a spec sheet. Come in and we will help you work through the options and find the right combination of R-value, weight, and comfort for your camping style.

Thermarest invented the self-inflating sleeping pad in 1971. Three Boeing engineers in Seattle got laid off and had been camping on whatever they could find when one of them noticed air escaping from a foam garden pad as he knelt on it. That observation led to the first self-inflating mattress, which Backpacker Magazine later named one of the five best outdoor inventions of all time. Thermarest has been setting the standard for sleeping pad technology ever since. We stock Thermarest across self-inflating pads, air pads, foam pads, compressible pillows, and repair kits, because they've continued to produce inovative products that are comfortable, durable and lightweight.
