Do I need to pre-book parking for Snowdon?
At Pen-y-Pass:
- April–November: booking required via Eryri National Park
- Winter: pay-and-display, but spaces are extremely limited
If you cannot book Pen-y-Pass, use:
- Nant Peris Park & Ride (Sherpa’r Wyddfa) — every 10–20 minutes
- Llanberis village parking — adds distance but reliable
- Other car parks for other paths?
Avoid roadside parking; it is unsafe and parking restrictions are enforced.
Where can I park for the Snowdon Horseshoe?
The Snowdon Horseshoe (via Crib Goch) is best started from:
Primary
- Pen-y-Pass car park (booking essential in season)
Alternative
- Nant Peris Park & Ride to Pen-y-Pass
Last Resort
- Llanberis — adds significant distance
There is no safe shortcut from Llanberis into the Horseshoe.
Can I start the Snowdon Horseshoe from somewhere else?
Technically yes, but not ideal.
Alternate starts include:
- Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel — adds 2–3 km
- Nant Peris — adds significant ascent
- Llanberis — long, inefficient
Most walkers begin at Pen-y-Pass for safety, convenience and time.
Do people still call it Snowdon?
Yes — you will hear both names remain widely used.
- Yr Wyddfa = Welsh name for the summit (pronounced “uhr-with-va”)
- Snowdon = long-standing English name
Eryri National Park now uses the Welsh name, locals do use both interchangeably but we prefer the Welsh name, since it’s a Welsh mountain in Wales.
Can I climb Snowdon in winter?
Yes — but it becomes a mountaineering route.
You must have:
- Crampons
- Ice axe
- Winter boots
- Full waterproofs
- Navigation skills
- Winter experience
Even the Llanberis Path is not a simple walk in snow or ice.
If unsure, hire a qualified local guide or wait for summer conditions. The mountain will still be there another day/
Can children climb Snowdon?
Yes, with good weather and the right route.
Best route:
- Llanberis Path
Avoid:
- Crib Goch
- Pyg Track in poor visibility
- Any winter ascent
Carry extra warm layers — children cool rapidly in the wind. Be especially careful if taking children in back carriers as they can easily become very cold as they are not moving
What map do I need for Snowdon?
OS Explorer OL17 (most detailed)
OS Landranger 115 (wider coverage)
If you want help with map reading, our team is always happy to talk you through the basics in-store.
